Most seniors, especially if traveling around Australia, use the Telstra network for their mobiles and internet access as the other carriers just can’t match the coverage out of metro areas. I’m surprised though, that many haven’t heard of the free app that Telstra provide that makes it much easier to keep track of their usage ‘on the go’ rather than logging into their account on a laptop or tablet.
The telco actually provides good and current info on your data usage and calls made so even though we may complain about their charges, at least we get access to a reasonably recent record of them!
After downloading the app, you will need your Telstra account username and password to complete the setup, but once this is done it will be saved for you so you can avoid having to enter it every time. If you have several devices as I do it means we can see at a glance how much data is remaining on the phone and mobile Internet device as other devices can be added to the same account (but you will need to do this from your account area on their website).
An especially useful feature is being able to top up a prepaid account from within the app. My understanding is this can be done even if you have no credit left as you are not charged for any data used by the app, but don’t quote me on that. You can see how much data has been used, the cost and also see bills for monthly accounts as well as prepaid, so basically anything important related to the accounts.
Another good feature is that you can also talk with a Telstra rep (by typing into the app screen, so it is easier on a tablet rather than most phones) using the 24×7 Chat service, although I’d make a coffee first before waiting to speak to one as it can often take 1/2 hour or more before one is free during the busy times.
If you have Telstra accounts, I recommend using the app as it does make checking the state of them much easier. Let us know in the comments if you have had any issues with it though.
