Phonotto: Simple Phone for Seniors

I talk to a lot of oldies (Oldies? hope he’s not talking about me… Andy) about phones, and if there’s one comment I hear most of all, it’s that they can do too much. “Back in my day, all we needed to do was send and receive calls, and we were happy.” Android phones offer a huge amount of options to the user, but sometimes all you want is simple dial functionality. That’s where Phonotto comes in.

No, it’s not a new kind of ice cream cone. Phonotto is a free “boot loader” app available on the Google Play Store, which means that it replaces your regular home screen with one specifically tailored for people who are just after call and text capabilities. Phonotto does away with the endless junk that many people have on their home screen, providing a very minimal alternative.

The Phonotto home screen has three quick-dial buttons which can be set to any phone number you desire very easily. It also includes five very big, colourful buttons for dial, missed calls, contacts, compose SMS, and messaging. Each of these buttons doesn’t just link you to your phone’s regular dial/SMS screen, though.

In Phonotto, clicking the Dial button, for example, takes you to a screen with very big prominent number buttons and clear instructions telling you what to do to make a call. It’s very handy if you’re the sort of person who’s always asking a younger relative to help them use their phone — I know I sure get those requests a lot!

If you get Phonotto and you really like it, by going to Preferences > Start at Boot and checking the box, you can make it so that every time your phone turns off and on again, it will start with Phonotto instead of the regular boot loader. Or, if you still want to play your games but like the big button calling and texting, you can just put a link to it on your home screen and click on it whenever you want to make a call. Simple!

While Androids4Seniors is all about helping seniors get the most out of their Android phones, Phonotto is a great little app for those of you who just like being able to call and text, and it’s very easy to use. Give it a try, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.
