flipboardI’ve been intending to write a review of Flipboard for ages as it is one of my favourite apps of all time. While there are many news sites out there on the internet covering all kinds of news and stories from technical, sporting, investment and US and World news – reading them using a tablet browser can be difficult (let alone on a phone).

Flipboard is the best news aggregator around and it seems to get better with every update. Using it to quickly browse news stories especially on a recent tablet with reasonable specs is just a delight. ‘Flipping’ from story to story then tapping on one that takes your fancy just seems a natural way to browse and it really, is reminiscent of flipping pages in a newspaper – hence the name!

The idea behind this app is to create a magazine that has stories based on your interests. You customise it to suit what you want to see, it’s that simple. While this app can be used on a phone, most users will find it best on a tablet (or at least a ‘phablet’ with a reasonably sized screen – at least 5.5 inches).

When you start Flipboard for the first time, to get started just swipe past the “Welcome to Flipboard” screen, you need to swipe up on phones while on tablets, swipe left. Note that you only need small gestures to flip pages on Flipboard, in fact it can be easy to accidentally tap a story and open the article – just tap the back key to return to where you were. On the next page, tap to start following the different topics suggested there. You can also login and read your Facebook and Twitter feeds (which I find more convenient than opening the Facebook app or website) and receive updates from your social networks. When finished setting things up the way you like it, tap “Build Your Flipboard” at the bottom.

The app description tells the full story:

★ All your news, interests and social updates in one personalized magazine.
★ Save stories you love into your own magazine. Use the “+” button on any item, select ‘create a magazine’ and collect favorite stories, images or videos.
★ Search for anything—people, topics, hashtags, blogs, your favorite sites—and flip through the results in a beautiful magazine format.
★ Connect Flipboard to up to 12 social networks, streamlining your reading and activities like commenting, liking and sharing. Services include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn, Flickr, 500px, SoundCloud, Sina Weibo and Renren.
★ Read Cover Stories for a quick check on what’s happening now. Cover Stories is created just for you and is filled with popular items from everything you’ve added to your Flipboard.
★ Enjoy Flipboard in 18 localized editions—for Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin America, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, U.S. and U.K.
★ Explore hundreds of staff picks in the Content Guide (tap the red ribbon at the top), including must-read magazines and blogs, gorgeous photography and special curated sections devoted to the news of the day and other interests.”

While some of the news areas are technical, many are of general interest like world news, art and photography and I’d be surprised if most readers can’t find an area that interests them. Well worth the download!
