I’m not very good at golf in real life. I’ve played before, but I’d be lucky if I ever put the ball in the hole in less than 7 strokes, and that’s not even including penalty strokes when I’ve lost my ball in the trees and had to put a new one down. So when I discovered Super Stickman Golf 2, I breathed a sigh of relief as I was able to swap my golf clubs for my Android phone once and for all.
Okay, not really! Super Stickman Golf 2 isn’t quite a replacement for a day at the links, but it fills a niche between the arcade and golf games. It’s not a golf simulation comparable to the Tiger Woods games. It is a 2D arcade-style game, in which you position an arrow directing your swing, then time a meter to set the power of your shot. All the while, you have to avoid obstacles such as sand, water… magnets, sticky flooring, and the abyss.
As I’ve said, this is much more an arcade game than a golf simulation. It doesn’t make any effort whatsoever to include any realism, which is a large part of the charm. It’s even very possible to score 4 and 5 under par on a few of the holes. Personally, I’ve unlocked a pirate hat for my character that turns all the water into blood. It’s purely an aesthetic change, but argh like it anyway! (I’m sorry for that joke.)
In any case, Super Stickman Golf 2 is a fun, colourful little game. It boasts seemingly endless levels with smoothly increasing difficulty. It’s even got a hint of puzzle to it, as you try to work out the most efficient way to get the ball in the hole. All in all, it’s a great way to spend a rainy day when you can’t make the effort to get out onto the real golf course.
And if you’ve played SSG2 and want more, you can always play its predecessor, surprisingly titled Super Stickman Golf. What more could you possibly want? If you’ve played it, or have any questions, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
