Cubles

It has been proven that frequent sessions of puzzle games such as Tetris can reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease by up to one-third. After all, keeping the brain active is just as important as keeping the body fit. The game Cubles, a hidden gem on the Play Store, might help you with that. Cubles is an addictive, colourful and, most importantly, challenging puzzle game that will keep your mind exercised and your fingers quick.

At its core, Cubles is a very simplistic game. You are provided with a grid of small squares of a number of different colours, and your job is to make rectangles which have all four corners the same colour. Upon completing a rectangle, each square within it that is the same colour as the corner squares will change colour. Each level has objectives that you must complete to progress, plus additional optional objectives that will earn you stars and experience points.

This sounds very easy so far, doesn’t it? Well, it gets trickier. Every level has a time limit, which adds a sense of urgency and promotes quick thinking. Additionally, not far into the game you’ll be introduced to the namesake–the Cubles. Cubles are little cube-shaped animals/objects/things that get in your way as you’re trying to make the rectangles. Generally, the Cubles just make a nuisance of themselves–shooting bombs, splashing water, and locking tiles from your use.

As well as the main story mode, featuring 6 stages each with 16 missions, there are also nine Arcade game types, which can either be unlocked by progressing through the main story or by paying to unlock. The first Arcade mode, Zen mode, is a simple timed three-colour challenge with no annoying Cubles in your way. In Arcade mode, high scores are recorded and compared with global leaderboards from this week and from all-time, so you can see how you stack up with other Cubles players from across the globe.

All in all, Cubles is a very fun puzzle game. The time limit can really get you stressed and frantically searching for that last rectangle–which is a good thing, for this sort of action-puzzle game. It also has a charming little art style, runs smooth as any game you’ve played before, a unique idea, and is crammed with content so you won’t get bored for an instant. Plus, the entire game is available for free! For such a feature-filled puzzler, $0 is a great price–how could you go wrong? Why not give it a try, and let me know what you thought in the comments? What was your high score?
