Telstra Air

telstraairIf you are a Telstra customer you probably already know that they have recently given us access to their free WiFi hotspots all over Australia (plus more than 14 million ‘Fon’ hotspots worldwide apparently) until 30th June 2016. If you didn’t already know about it then I suggest you signup soon – after all, you don’t get much free from Telstra do you? As we are travelling the country still, we will be making good use of the service by taking our laptops and tablets into shopping malls and the like as there are no time or data limits!

The Telstra Air app is a convenient method to easily locate the nearest hotspot to you by using the GPS on your phone or tablet. Once you are in range of a hotspot you should be able to automatically connect by using your Telstra ID and password – so if you aren’t sure of yours or you don’t have one yet, now would be a good time to get one. To activate Telstra Air, just visit the website page at www.telstra.com.au/air and follow the instructions, you can also apply for your Telstra ID there too if you haven’t already got one.telstraair2

As you can see from the screenshot, the hotspots are clearly marked and you can just ‘pinch zoom’ to find the exact street locations.

Edited May 2016: Telstra have extended the free offer until 30th September.

Telstra haven't announced what will happen after the free trial ends. Rest assured though that they have no means of blocking other free WiFi connections (they don't have that much power!) so that isn't an issue believe me!

The catch being Telstra Air will be offered after that deadline and it will be part of your home download. I wonder if the could then block us using other free public wifi. Doris Isa
