This app could very well save your life – literally. We can all imagine being in a serious situation and not being able to (or too scared to) call someone for help, or simply be unable to use the phone in a medical emergency. Shake For Help is designed for just these situations and from my testing it seems to do the job well.
In essence it works like this – download and install the app from Google Play then open it. Go through the step by step – and very simple – process to set a 4 digit PIN code, your email address to be used in the event you forget the PIN, up to three of your contacts mobile numbers and finally give the phone a good shake a couple of times to calibrate the app and you’re finished.
I tested it on my wife’s phone and was amazed to receive a text message from the app when I vigorously shook the phone that not only had the emergency call for help but also the current position of the phone to within 25 metres accuracy. Very impressive. My wife even said ‘ok, leave that one on my phone as even I can turn it on and shake it like mad if I need you to come get me!
From the app maker’s description :
We have designed this app to be extremely simple to use. Elderly people who have no experience with smartphones will easily be able to use this app. Young children will have no problem using the app. The configuration process is simple and walks the user through the process, step by step, in simple English. After the app has been configured, all the user needs to know is how to shake their phone!
Features in this version…
★ Quick, easy configuration process (takes a minute or two)
★ To let emergency contacts know you are in trouble, shake the phone until it vibrates
★ When in emergency mode, the phone is silenced, so that your attacker is not alerted
★ When in emergency mode, your phone will vibrate periodically to let you know it is sending out alerts
★ If you accidentally trigger an alert, shake the device again to turn it off
★ Notifies emergency contacts of your location, speed, direction, and battery level
★To cancel emergency mode, simply shake the phone until it vibrates (or launch it and tap “I am safe”)
The txt messages I received from my wife’s phone when she shook it (vigorously – you can’t accidentally activate it I don’t think) are shown above – note that you get two when the phone is shaken and another when the alert has been cancelled.
I noticed that one review said that the user had put her phone in a car cradle and it had started sending out the help messages which highlights the fact that you need to vigorously shake the phone when calibrating it to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.
Give this app serious consideration, if not for yourself then for an elderly relative or friend who might thank you one day.
