Need A Better Calculator?

calculatorplusNearly every Android device comes with a calculator already installed, but they are often fairly basic apps and in my experience many lack a few important features – percentage calculations is one lacking in most for example.

We downloaded the most popular calculator apps for you and gave them a good work out to see which was the best.

The first one tested is called Calculator Plus. Apparently, USA TODAY named named this one among its “25 Essential Apps”, calling it the “handy calculator app that’s garnered great user ratings”

Here’s some info from the app description:
– You’ll never forget where you are in a calculation – shows you exactly what’s happening at all times
– Shows your calculations in clear, elegant type that’s easy to read, with commas just where they should be
– You can use backspace anytime to correct a simple mistake, instead of starting over
– Use memory to keep a running total you can actually see
– Percentage key shows exactly what it did, so you’re not left confused
– Swipe memory keys aside for advanced math functions!
– NEW! Full support for Samsung Multi-Window – true multitasking for your Galaxy device.

The support for the multi-window feature will be a very handy inclusion for those users with one of the newer Galaxy tablets as it allows you to have the calculator visible while viewing say, a webpage and this would allow you to calculate while looking at a price list etc.calculatorwithpercent

I found this app very good – nice clear keys and display and it includes the percentage function which I need in a calculator. While the free version (there is a paid app without ads) had ads they are at the top of the display and aren’t easily tapped my mistake. One possible downside is the size, at 12Mb it’s a large app for just a calculator.

The second one I tried extensively is called Calculator with Percent (Free) although when installed it has a slightly different name (Calculator Magma). This one has a totally different display style – more like the old LED type of real calculators with bright colours on a dark background. It has similar features to Calculator Plus and as a bonus it includes memory save/recall. This one has no ads and will appeal to some while others might find the dark background and bright numerals a little distracting.

This one has very little in the app description area, it just basically covers what I have said about it, but most reviews are very positive in the Play Store.

On balance, I prefer Calculator Plus, but give them both a try yourself and see which one suits your needs the best. The links to get them are shown below.
