Growing number of Chromecast apps becoming available

Get some more chromecast apps

In my last post about using Google Chromecast I mentioned some of the apps that are available that can stream video or music to your Chromecast. Well, the list is gradually growing so here’s some to add to your collection of apps to use on your shiny new Chromecast. Links to all the apps are at the bottom of the post.

  1. Spotify Music. The great music streaming service that caters not just for the ‘younguns’ (jeepers I’m sounding old now and I’ve only just turned 60…) is now Chromecast ‘aware’. I currently have a Best of the Seventies station playing on our Chromecast as I write this. Sure, the free service has ads, but you get 30 minutes ad-free at the beginning if you just watch a 30 second ad which is no problem to me. My understanding is that the recently updated Spotify app will work on all the new round Chromecasts but if you have an older model that looks more like a large key it won’t until an update is made available for it – from Google presumably.
  2. TED. If you want to watch some of the best video talks and conferences on the TV instead of a small screen device – and really most are best on large screens as the TED presenters often use images and graphics – then install the TED app. TED Talks are becoming very popular with seniors and the range of topics is immense. One of my favourite Chromecast apps.
  3. Sesame Street. Want to keep the grandkids entertained and educated with Sesame Street videos? If you are in the US, then try this one. It’s not available in other countries without using a VPN service which is a pity.
  4. Karaoke Time. Finally, the last one in this roundup of Chromecast apps will appeal to those amongst us who like to sing along out of tune to our favourites (usually after a few too many cold ones in some cases). This is a clever app that lists YouTube karaoke videos (of which there appear to be millions) – the bit I like is that you can choose the genre you prefer, so if you just want to singalong to Elvis or other 50’s songs you can choose just that era. A bit of fun and some of the videos don’t have the original music, just electronic versions of it, but many are very well done with just the vocals muted and good scrolling lyrics. Good for that next party maybe – worth checking out anyway if you are into karaoke!

Let us know in the comments if you have found any other Chromecast apps – the list is growing daily. A few of the seniors at our local computer club have bought and installed their Chromecasts themselves without any major problems so the devices are not just for those ‘techy types’!
