ABC Australia Radio

ABC RadioI thought it only fitting that the first app review should be targeted at Australian seniors. There will be plenty more app reviews to come, some intended for Aussies, but most useful for seniors from all countries.

Info from the Play Store description:
The new ABC Radio App gives you access to over 19 radio stations from the ABC. Optimised to deliver fast and easy access to your favourite ABC radio stations, the app also offers track or program information, weekly online schedules, automatic bookmarking of stations and an alarm so you can wake up to your favourite ABC Radio station.

This is one of the first apps I recommend Aussie seniors put on their Android device as it works well and is uncomplicated. It is fantastic for those occasions when you are away from home and want to listen to your favourite ABC station streaming live over the internet. The ABC Radio app uses a Shoutcast mp3 stream at 96kbs, which uses about 44 MB/hour – in simple language this means that while playing a station it will be downloading data from your internet connection, but at a modest amount per hour. Many phone data plans provide several gigabytes (Gb) per month so it will take a fair while to use a significant amount (1Gb = 1000Mb).

I like the placement of the four recently played stations at the top of the app screen, the clear and easy to read station tiles and the addition of an ‘Exit’ button so you can be sure it has really closed down! We’ll go into how Android apps are used in another post, but for now just remember that apps that deliver audio like this one will continue running if you tap the Home or Back buttons – so you can continue to listen while doing another task. All well-written audio apps have an Exit button so that the app can be shut down once it is no longer required.

Note that the ABC app does have a ‘Snooze’ function so you can drift off to sleep listening to the radio which will turn it off after the snooze period. They have also thought about the other scenario : you leave it playing and fall asleep without using Snooze. It will kindly remind you after 45 minutes and if you don’t acknowledge the notification it will gracefully shutdown ! Thanks ABC, we reckon you’ve thought of everything with this app.

Enjoy, Andy

Thanks for the comments Geoff. I can't get my app to exit other than by stopping the radio stream then pressing the Back button. After a while (or if the device needs the memory for another app) it exits by itself anyway, so I wouldn't worry about the lack of an Exit button. I'll have to finish writing a more complete post about how Android manages memory and apps as this is a common question asked by those more used to other operating systems like Windoze. Merry Christmas !!!

The Exit is done now by double hit of the pause button (I think). At least the sound stops. If we could only download a PDF of instructions for it.... Geoff (Parkdale)
